A single temperature describes neither an organism nor the soil. Trends and microhabitats matter more than a number presented as universal.

Separate air from ground
A weather station records the air under a defined protocol, not the exact temperature beneath every litter layer. Canopy, exposure, wind, water and soil depth create local differences. Avoid tables that promise growth as soon as a precise number is reached, because they erase the diversity of species and habitats.
Read trends rather than thresholds
Look at several days and the range between daytime and night rather than one reading. A change can help describe the context of an outing, but it is not a sufficient cause. Combine it with rainfall, moisture indicators, season and habitat before selecting an area to observe.
Compare small-scale contexts
On a reasonable route, compare an exposed slope, a covered area or a change in elevation without trying to measure everywhere. Record visible contrasts and personal sensation only as qualitative observations. Do not turn a cooler pocket into proof of presence or leave safe paths to validate a hypothesis.

Keep temperature in its proper role
Temperature helps ask a better question: which areas may have developed differently? It does not name a species, date fruiting or confirm edibility. When the field contradicts the plan, keep that contradiction rather than selecting only the details that support the original scenario. Record the source of each reading.
